Cracked or chipped windscreen, what to do?

We’ve all been there. We’re driving along when suddenly there’s a sharp bang as a stone hits the windscreen leaving a nasty crack behind. Once we’ve recovered from the shock of the incident, what should we do? If it’s only a little chip, do we need to do anything about it?

It’s worth remembering that the windscreen does more than simply keeping the wind and rain out. A clear windscreen is important if we want to have good vision, and the windscreen has a structural role to play in holding the vehicle together. So, it’s probably not a good idea just to ignore the chip and hope it doesn’t turn into a larger problem.

Repairing or replacing your windscreen

A chipped windscreen can be distracting and, depending on its position, may reduce visibility. If your chip is 40mm or less in diameter – roughly equivalent to a 5p piece – it should be repairable. A repair company will clean and dry the chip, then fill it with a clear resin that resembles glass when set.

Although your chipped windscreen won’t be quite as good as new, it’ll have a smooth surface and the damage will be much less visible.

It’s worth getting this done as soon as possible, as moisture or dirt gathering in the chip could make it harder to see out. Added to that, small chips can spread until they’re unrepairable, and secondary cracks can appear as the windscreen is more vulnerable. If this happens, you’ll have to fork out for a new windscreen, so it’s best to avoid the unnecessary expense and inconvenience where possible.

Passing your MOT test

Aside from the safety benefits of a pristine windscreen, having chips or cracks could also affect your car’s ability to pass its MOT test. If you want to be sure that your trusty motor won’t fail because of a chipped windscreen, check out the following guidelines:

  • Chips in the ‘A-Zone’
    If your chip is in the A-Zone (a 290mm wide band centred at the steering column and covering the windscreen wiper swept area on the driver’s side) and is larger than 10mm in diameter, this will result in an MOT fail.
  • Chips in other areas
    If your chip is elsewhere, it can be up to 40mm in diameter without resulting in an MOT fail (but it’s still important that you get it fixed).
